We use the term "connected", or sometimes "hybrid", to indicate the strategy of storing large, unchanging assets on optical media, such as a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and making lower-bandwidth, time-sensitive assets and databases updatable via the Internet. This is ideal for the client who worries that a product will go out of date before it generates a healthy return on investment.
A great application for this technology is outside sales. With the laptop computer connected to the Internet while at the motel or airport, your client's sales representative can update your presentation with the latest pricing and promotions data, new product intros, spec sheets, white papers and the like. The subsequent meetings with customers will feature completely up-to-date support materials, without needing any Internet connection during the meetings.
Obviously, this cannot be done successfully with the typical simplistic "CD-ROM with web links" approach. Web browser caching is a poor substitute for giving your presentation engine complete, intelligent, user-adjustable control over its assets.
