The mission of this project was two-fold:
First, the fast moving, eye catching introduction highlighted the potential market that was being ignored by most dealers at the time. Then the Maximizing Dealer link section focused on opportunity, dealership approach, work flow and selling strategies.
Once the salespeople were convinced that the potential was worth their time and had gotten a bird's eye view of how they could fit it into the work flow at their dealerships, the training section was there to guide them through the details.
From a programming point of view, the interesting part was making it easy and intuitive for the users to switch back and forth between stepping through the simulations and working with their real web sites. We created a palette window that contained the text instructions for each step. It also had the controls for next, previous, repeat, print and toggling back to the tutorial.
When the users finished a subsection of the tutorial, they were asked if they would like to go try out the live site. If so, their web browser was instructed to go to the appropriate URL and the large simulation window disappeared, leaving only the palette window open and set to stay on top of the opening web browser window. This way, the users still had a handy way to look up any of the steps they needed to perform while doing the real thing. When they were ready to learn the next section, or if they got stuck at any time, clicking the Return to Tutorial button would instantly put them back in the simulation environment.
